Their eyes were watching God: Thesis Statement

Even though Janie is a dynamic character she still sticks to her childhood dreams.

Go on to speak about Janie not being dynamic, but being more estatic.

Their eyes were watching God: Event Response 2

Chapter 10-12

In chapter 10, we see Janie becoming more and more independent. She becomes independent about herself and the way she thinks about things. She begins wearing her hair down, she rins the store by herself, she talks to people that she wants to talk to. There is no Joe Starks there telling Janie what and what not she should be doing. From 11-12 Janie begins to atually flurt with Tea Cake and Tea Cake does it right back. Tea Cake begins walking her home, having sex with her, and taking her to picnics. Although everyone in the town is dissapointed that Janie is going out with a poor person and that she is doing herself wrong and dead Joe wrong, she does not care what anyone else thinks. She finally shows that she is a independent ladie that does whatever she wants whenever she wants.

Their eyes were watching God: Event Response

Chapter 6

In chapter 6, Matt Bonner's dog is always being made fun of and mistreated by other people. You can tell that the dog does not like the owner because it runs away to the front of Janies store. The men outside of the store are agrivating the poor mule and Janie sees this. Janie starts mumbling and talking to others about how mean it is to do such a thing. Joe over hears Janie talking so he decides to buy the dog for 5 dollars from the owner. The townspeople think that this deed of Joe is so Noble and Brave that they think its like Lincoln ending slavery.

This event is very important because when the dog dies the people take the loss like a war that has ended. Everyone knows that the dog was in pain and has gone to another place and thats why people refer to this event as they way the refer it. But, the people referring to Joe as being like Lincoln is on another scale. Freeing slaves is much more important than freeing a dog from its misery. Also the townspeople do not see the real Joe when he is slapping women and mistreating women. He is not noble, and hes a horrible person. Although the people cant see this, one person can. This one person is not aloud to talk to other people in the town because they are trashy.

Their eyes were watching God Quotation Response

"Ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board. For some they come in with the tide. For others they sail forever on the horizon, never out of sight, never landing until the Watcher turns his eyes away in resignation, his dreams mocked to death by Time. That is the life of men. Now, women forget all those things they don’t want to remember, and remember everything they don’t want to forget. The dream is the truth. Then they act and do things accordingly."

This quotation is stating a difference in the way men and women act and think. Men will keep on following or chasing something until they fail or know that there going to fail. The death by time is what makes the men fail in this example in the story. Women forget everything thats unimportant and they want to forget, and they remember all the important things or the things they want to remember. They control their minds to what the want and dont want to forget. This is how the book states women and men think differently.

Huck and Finn Quotation Response 6

pg 209

"As a general thing it makes a body wish he was dead."

The reason why I chose this quote is because it seems so powerful. Something so general and normal, can make someone think that they wish they were dead. It gives a lot of character to the general thing that they are talking about. I dont know how this quotation will affect or be used anywhere else in the poem.

Huck and Finn Quotation Response 5

pg 199

"So the king sneaked into the wigwam and took to his bottle for comforyt, and before long the duke tackled HIS bottle;"

The reason why I chose this quotation is because to me it shows a lot of emotion of different sorts. The KING has to sneak around, when does a King have to sneak around to do or look for something, hes the most powerful person, he doesnt have to sneak anything, he can do what ever he wants. Another is the word his is capatilized showing that the bottle is his own and nobody elses like someone is going to take it. This shows so demanding type of emotion. This might cause some sort of conflict more into the story because of this.

Huck and Finn Quotation Response 4

pg 89

"It was a monstrous big river here, with the tallest and the thickest kind of timber on both banks; just a solid wall, as well as I could see by the stars."

This quotation is a great description of what the character is looking at at the time. It gives specific information and also describes the surroundings of it. The reason why I chose the quotation is becasue the character makes something that is actually small in life seem so big because of the description of it. It also includes the stars and I really like the stars and space.

Huck and Finn Quotation Response 3

pg 71

"A towhead is a sandbar that has cottonwoods on it as thick as harrow-teeth."

The reason why I chose this quote is because in the book there is a quote as a definition which is rarely ever seen. I also picked this quote because this is about the 6th time in the book I have seen use of personification. In one of my last quotation responses there was a use of personification. This quote describes what a towhead is. If the book gives the definition of the word, I think its going to be used throughout the rest of the book.

Paper Topic 3

The paper topic I have chosen is Paper Topic number 1. This is called writing a wrong. The reason why I chose this paper topic is because I would like to learn about a situation at Proctor Academy that could have been handled better and why.

Huck Finn Quotation Response 2

pg 25

"Why, a magician could call up a lot of genies, and they would hash you up like nothing before you could say Jack Robinson."

The reason why I chose this quote is because it is comparing something that is not real to something that is real. Although we cannot see the whole situation, judging by this quotation this is telling me that there is a comparison being talked about. It is hard to compare something that is real and not realy because the thing that is not real, will never happen because its fiction, so it could be true or false. This quotation is just giving back up to a statement that is brought up back in the story. This quote has nothing to do with the rest of the story at all but convicing something.

Huck Finn Quotation Response 1

pg 15

"I set down again, a shaking all over, and got out my pipe for a smoke, for the house was all as still as death now, and so tthe widow wouldnt know."

The reason why I have chosen this quotation is because Huck uses personification in this statement. He gives a house human qaulities by saying it is still and almost like someone who is dead cause they will never move again. Another reason why I chose this quote is because Huck is going against the widow's orders of not smoking when he actually is. This quote is important because it shows that Huck will almost never listen even in a important situation like being healthy and clean. This tells us that in the rest of the story he will be smoking sometimes.

Would I label Dickinson as a Transcendentalist?

I would absolutely label Emily Dickinson as a transcendentalist. He speaks of nature numorous times. He also does not care of what people think of him as a individual, like for instance on pg 86 XX, Dickinson speaks of drinking and getting drunk and not caring about what people think of him. He also compares heaven, shadows, and nature together in the reading XXXI in Day 1. But the whole point of Emersons and Thoreaus thoughts were individualism and nature, and Dickinson definatetly uses nature and indivdualism in his entries.

Paper Topic 2

The paper topic I have chosen was Paper Topic number 1. The reason why I chose this is because I would like to find out who most resembles or follows Emersons teachings the most.

Song of Myself by Walt Whitman Quotation Response 2

pg 83

"The past and present wilt."

This quotation is very short and thats one reason why I chose thuis quote. Another is because it seems like a very strong saying. Giving to different parts of time a comment is very weird to me. I dont understant why Whitman uses this quote as his first sentence. I believe it should be around the end. But it does somewhat explain the story to us. He now talks about his future and what he plans to do and gets away from the past and present.

Song of Myself by Walt Whitman Quotation Response 1

pg 83

"And such as it is to be of these more or less I am, And of these one and all I weave the song of myself."

The reason why I chose this quotation is because it explains everything that he is talkuing about in this story. It also sums up everything whitman is talking about. This quotation means that Whitman does his daily routine just like everyone else. This also explains the whole story. The reason why Whitman keeps on giving examples of these different things and what people do is because it explains there lives.

The Ministers Black Veil a Parable Quotation Response 2

pg 56

At that instant, catching a glimpse of his figure in the looking-glass, the black veil involved his own spirit in the horror with which it overwhelmed all others.

The reason why I chose this statement is because it shows how Hooper feels about himself after he has realized what he looks like to everyone else. This statement means that Hoopers has seen the fear that he has caused everyone else to feel. He sees how everyone feels. Hoopers becomes scared of what he has seen. He has seen himself in a horrible version and never wants to see that. This statement is very important to the story because it tells us how Hoopers has felt about himself after looking at himself through everyone elses perspective.

The Ministers Black Veil a Parable Quotation Response

pg 55

The black veil, though it only covers our pastor's face, throws its influence over his whole person, and makes him ghostlike from head to foot.

The reason why I chose this statement is because it gives us information about what the black veil means. The black veil means that it hides his dark side. It hides a face that has done something wrong or evil. The influence that made him do this has captured him and taken him away from society. This statement helps us know what the black veil means and also gives us a reason on why Hooper is wearing the black veil.

Quotation Resonse 2 on Young Goodman Brown

pg 73

" Faith! Faith! Look up to heaven, and resist the wicked one."

The reason why I picked this quotation is because it sounds so powerful. He is telling Faith not to be taken by the wicked one. Goodman is giving demand to something that cant be given demand to. Its almost like he is desperate. He sounds very sad and if something goes wrong everything is done for him. This quotation has not a lot to do with the story because its at the end.

Quotation Resonse 1 on Young Goodman Brown

pg 63

"Say thy prayers, dear Faith, and go to bed at dusk, and no harm will come to thee"

The reason why I chose this quotation is because it sounds very romantic and almost some what demanding. This quotation means that if Goodmans wife prays for him and goes to bed at dusk, then it will almost be like Goodman never left. Also that Goodmans wife wont have to worry about him all night if she falls asleep early. This quotation has a lot to do with this story. Goodman refers to his wife as Faith and in the story Faith is decribed a lot. Also this quotation some what keeps the wife in the story because shes still thinking about him.

The heart of Thoreau's Journals: Dec. 16 1837 Quotation Response

pg 32

" How indispensable to a correct study of Nature is a perception of her true meaning."

The true reason why I picked this quotation was because it sounded interesting. What this quotation means is that to actually see the beauty of nature and understand it, its necessary to know what nature is and what it means. There are some things in nature that are really nasty and disgusting, but to other people they can really like it and think its beautiful because they have a better meaning and understanding about it. Thoreau is trying to say that to see something in its full beauty and potential, study it and learn about it. I dont know what this has to do with the rest of the story cause I have not read the rest of the story.

The heart of Thoreau's Journals: Oct. 22 1837 Quotation Response

pg 32

" To be alone I find it necessary to escape the present- I avoid myself."

The reason why i chose this quotation was because it seemed interesting to me that you have to avoid yourself and everything that is present to officially be alone. The quote means that to be alone you have to get rid of all emotion and everything that you are feeling inside. You also have to stop thinking about whats going on in life wether its the past, present, or future. Because to be alone, nothing can be going on wether its outside or in your head. Everything has to be gone. I think that Thoreau is trying to say that no one is ever alone no matter where you are or how your feeling, because your always feeling something or thinking about something. I dont know what this has to do with the rest of the story cause I havent read any of the story but one paragraph.

Henry David Thoreau Quotation Resonse 2

pg 24

" That man that does not beleive that each day contains an earlier, more sacred, and Auroral hour than he has yet profaned, has despaired of life, and is pursuing a descending and darkening way."

The reason why i picked this quotation is because what he is saying are very strong and effectionate words. He shows how much he cares about the Auroral and earlier times of day. He thinks that if you dont care about a eariler time of day or the Auroral that your just a waste of time and space. He beleives that there is always a earlier time of day and it should never be wasted. This quotation tells us that we should always try to do things earlier and if we do then we have more time in our lives. I especially agree with this because for example, if you are sleeping till 12:30 then you just wasted a good 5 or 6 hours of your life doing nothing. Thoreau is just trying to say not to ever try to waste time cause its not good for you or other people sometimes.

Henry David Thoreau Quotation Resonse 1

pg 24

"I have been sincere a worshipper of Aurora as the Greeks."

I chose this quotation because Thoreau is comparing himself to people in history and I love history. To say that you have treated the Aurora with as much respect and kindness as the Greeks did is truly something because the Greeks worshipped the Aurora as a goddess and the Greeks were crazy about there gods and goddesses. So Thoreau is comparing himself to people just like him and people in history also. The quote means that Thoreau loves and cares about the dawn and how he thinks its the most important part of the day. He is also saying that there is no one like him in this day that respects the dawn as much as he does. What this tells about the story is that he cares about dawn and he will do anything for it.

4 Quotations on Self Reliance and Nature by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Self Reliance
1) "We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents." I think this quote is saying that we are ashamed of what each of us stands for, or what we think and what our beleifs are and that we are just embarrased of ourselves.
2) "Good and bad are but names very readily transferable to that or this; the only right is what is after my constitution; the only wrong what is against it." I think this means that the only right thing is what you beleive in and what you stand up for and the only wrong is someone that disagrees with YOUR OWN opinion.
3) "For noncomformity the world whips you with displeasure. And therefore a man must know how to estimate a sour face." This to me is very important cause its really saying to get out of your comfort zone(to me). And for someone to be able to tell when your not happy with it will be able to help you.
4) "With consitency a great soul simply has nothing to do." This is saying that if you keep on repeating the same routine or keep doing the same thing everyday over and over again, then much time has gone to waste. Life gives us plenty of time to try something new or uncomfortable to ourselves.

Nature
1) "To go into solitude, a man needs to retire as much from his chamber as from society." This says that to be alone all the time and unhappy, you mustve or must give up everything you like as much as what you give up from society which is space.
2) "If the stars should appear one night in a thousand years, how would men beleive and adore; and preserve for many generations the rememberance of the city of God which had shown!" I think this quote i saying that stars heal all emotion or problems. Stars are so beatiful that it can even make your day and without them we would be miserable.
3) "Nature never wears a mean appearance." This is saying that nature never trys to put you down and will never put you down cause its ment for beauty and happiness.
4) "The sun eluminates only the eye of a man, but shines into the eye and heart of a child." I think this is very important cause it is saying the sun is so beautiful and powerful that it can take away a eye of a strong man but also create another being.

What Nick Libby wants to learn in American Literature.

I would like to learn how to write a essay better for important stuff such as a school assignment or for example MCAS and SAT's. I would like to also learn how to use better termolology. Also to use the right termolology at the right time. I would like to understand books that I usually dont understand better because that will help me out a lot for college and etc. I would just like to learn how to become a better literary person (if that made sense?).
